Shaun Woodward has been appointed Northern Ireland Secretary by new British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Mr Woodward was previously Peter Hain's deputy in the Northern Ireland Office with responsibility for security and it is understood he was appointed today because of his experience in that area.
One of his principal tasks as Northern Secretary will be the devolution of justice and policing in Northern Ireland.
Mr Woodward's former boss at the Northern office, Peter Hain, has become Secretary for Work and Pensions but retains his responsibilities for Wales.
In what was one of the most radical reshuffles since Labour came to power in Britain ten years ago, Alastair Darling was named Chancellor of the Exchequer.
David Milliband has been appointed Foreign Secretary. The 41-year-old is the youngest person to hold the office since David Owen in the 1970s.
And former Labour Chief Whip Jacqui Smith becomes the first woman to take the post of Home Secretary.
Meanwhile, Alan Johnson is to be Health Secretary, following the overnight resignation of Patricia Hewitt and Hilary Benn will be the new Environment Secretary.
After outlining the shape of his new cabinet, Mr Brown chaired his first cabinet meeting this afternoon.
