Chemical Ali - Death sentence for genocidal campaign

One of Saddam Hussein's leading henchmen has been sentenced to death for his part in a genocidal campaign against Iraq's ethnic Kurds in the 1980s in which tens of thousands of people were killed.

Ali Hassan al-Majid - known as Chemical Ali - is one of three former high-ranking members of Saddam's regime to receive the death sentence.

He oversaw the operation in which poison gas was used.

Two others were sentenced to life in prison and a fifth was acquitted for lack of evidence.

Saddam was hanged in December 2006 after an earlier trial over the killing of 148 Shia Muslims in the town of Dujail in July 1981.
