The video game Manhunt 2 has become the first game to be banned in Ireland.

The Irish Film Censor's Office made the decision because the game was deemed to be too violent.

According to film censor John Kelleher, Manhunt 2 features gross levels of manipulation, torture and unrelenting and gratuitous brutality.

Britain's Board of Film Classification has also banned the game, saying it was bleak, callous and encouraged visceral killing.

The IFCO made the decision because the game contained an unacceptable level of violence.

The censor said he recognised that in some films or video games strong graphic violence may be a justifiable element within the overall context of the work.

But he said that in the case of this game, there was no context and the brutality was unrelenting and gratuitous.
