At least 12 people have been killed and 40 wounded in a series of bomb lasts in Iraq.

In the capital Baghdad, two near simultaneous blasts in the southern district of Saidiyah left nine people dead.

Another 25 Iraqis were wounded when the bombs exploded as motorists queued for petrol.

While in Anbar province, west of Baghdad, a bombing in the centre of Fallujah killed three people and left 15 wounded.

The city is known as a stronghold of the Sunni insurgency and around 6,000 US troops are stationed in the region in an effort to stem the violence.

And at least 20 Shia militants have been killed in clashes with US-led forces in Maysan province in the south of the country.

The clashes occurred when US and Iraqi forces came under attack in Amara. 45 others were wounded in the exchanges that followed.
