Brian Lenihan - Announced an annual funding package for Cherry Orchard care centre

The Minister for Children, Brian Lenihan, has announced details of a funding package worth €465,000 a year for a care centre at a new landmark €11.5m school project in Cherry Orchard, Dublin.

The centre houses a primary school as well as nursery, pre-school and after-school care facilities in one purpose built centre.

The funding is specifically for the care centre, and will allow the managers to hire up to 14 care staff.

Last February, an RTÉ News report highlighted the fact that the Department of Education had paid for the construction of the centre buildings, but had failed to provide sufficient funding for the set up and running of the facilities, particularly the school.

This had led to a situation where the school's principal had to borrow €4,000 to help with the set up of the school - money which was later paid back by the board of management.

The first intake to the school was in September of last year, when 55 infants started.

Today the school Principal, Ena Morley, said that since February there had been great engagement by all of the stakeholders. She said the school now either had most of the resources it needs or is in processes where it is hopeful it will get them.

However, she did express concern that a failure by the department to award Curriculum Grants meant there was still a lack of teaching resources.
