Mahmoud Abbas - Warning over continuing factional violence

The Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, has warned that continuing violence in Gaza risks taking the region to the point of collapse.

Mahmoud Abbas described the situation as 'madness' and he blamed all those carrying guns.

The Palestinian Minister for Justice, Ali al Sartawi of Hamas, said the battle for power has descended into civil war.

Fierce fighting between armed members from the rival Hamas and Fatah factions escalates daily as they battle for control of several key buildings in Gaza City.

The Fatah party said it will boycott all cabinet meetings of the Palestinian unity government coalition with Hamas until a ceasefire is implemented in Gaza.

At least 17 people have been reported killed in fighting today and more than 60 people have died in the last week.

Yesterday, at least 28 people died and over 150 were injured.

In northern Gaza, Hamas militants overran the headquarters of the Fatah-controlled national security forces.

Earlier, a mortar was fired at the compound of President Mahmoud Abbas and a rocket-propelled grenade hit the home of the Hamas Prime Minister, Ismail Haniyeh.

John Ging, Director of the United Nations Relief and Work Programme, who is in Gaza city, said the current conflict in the territory could be long and bloody.
