Woman rescued off Co Clare coastline

A 20-year-old woman has been airlifted to hospital after being injured while diving from rocks near Doolin in Co Clare.

The alarm was raised shortly before 6 o'clock this evening by friends of the woman who is thought to be from Shannon.

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coastguard was alerted and arrived on scene within minutes.

The woman was discovered injured at the base of a 60 foot cliff from which people regularly jump or dive into the sea.

The circumstances of the incident are not clear but it is thought the woman sustained her injuries while jumping from a ledge near the base of the cliff.

She has since been airlifted by the Shannon based Irish Coastguard helicopter to University College Hospital in Galway.

The woman is suffering from suspected spinal injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.
