Mahon Tribunal - Hears evidence from Tom Gilmartin of O'Callaghan's boasts

Tom Gilmartin has told the Mahon Tribunal that rival developer Owen O'Callaghan told him he paid Bertie Ahern a total of £80,000 for help with the Quarryvale project.

And he said Mr O'Callaghan also bragged about paying the then Taoiseach, Albert Reynolds, £150,000 in relation to another development.

Tom Gilmartin said Mr O’Callaghan would often brag about paying politicians.

But he told Mr O'Callaghan in 1989 that the one politician he trusted was the then Minister for Labour, Bertie Ahern.

Mr Gilmartin said Mr Ahern had helped him stop the developers of the Blanchardstown Town Centre getting land he needed for Quarryvale.

He said Mr O'Callaghan told him in reply that this only happened because he had paid Mr Ahern £50,000 at a match.

And in 1993 he claimed Mr O'Callaghan said he paid then Finance Minister Bertie Ahern £30,000 to ensure the Blanchardstown centre would not get tax incentives.

He said Mr O'Callaghan also told him he had given £150,000 to Albert Reynolds in the bedroom of his Cork home at 3am in March 1994, and that this was in return for the tax designation of the Golden Island Centre in Athlone.

The tribunal heard both Mr Ahern and Mr Reynolds strenuously deny the allegations.
