Spanish police have arrested the leader of the banned Basque separatist party, Batasuna.

A party official said Arnaldo Otegi was taken into police custody just minutes before he was due to start a news conference in the Basque city of San Sebastian.

Spain's High Court ordered his arrest on charges of praising terrorism at a demonstration in 2003 to commemorate the death of an ETA rebel.

His arrest comes just three days after ETA broke off a ceasefire it had declared in March 2006.
