China: Homes washed away in floods

Some 2,000 homes have been washed away after days of prolonged rainstorms in China's eastern province of Jiangxi.

Houses in 59 towns were wrecked by the floods, which followed heavy rains in the region that began on Thursday.

There have been a number of casualties but the exact number has not yet been determined, according to local officials.

Thousands of houses have been evacuated because of the floods, which have caused an estimated €9.7 million worth of damage.

Weather forecasters said the province would suffer more rain over the next two days.

At least 43 people in southwest Sichuan province were killed at the end of last month by incidents triggered by rainstorms.
