The Freedom of the City of Cork was conferred on entertainer Michael Flatley at a ceremony in City Hall this afternoon.

The Fermoy resident joins a long list of people who have received the honour since the custom first began in the 14th Century.

The list includes President John F Kennedy, President Mary McAleese, John Hume and Roy Keane.

The City Council voted overwhelmingly earlier this year to confer the honour on Mr Flatley in recognition of ‘his achievements as a world class performer and a person of outstanding artistic talent’
