UN - Russia rejects new draft on Kosovo

Russia has rejected the latest UN Security Council resolution backing a UN plan for supervised independence for the Serbian province of Kosovo.

Moscow's UN ambassador, Vitaly Cherkin, said concessions in the new draft changed nothing.

He again hinted that Russia, an ally of Serbia, which opposes independence, might veto the resolution.

But the American Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, re-iterated the Bush administration's view that independence was the only way forward for the province.
