Iran-US talks - Discussing Iraq's future

The United States has described talks with Iranian diplomats on the future of Iraq as 'positive' and 'businesslike'.

The talks involving the US Ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, and his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Kazemi-Qomi, were the first high level bilateral meeting between the countries for 27 years.

The US said that both sides had agreed to support the Iraqi government, but the US is still accusing Iran of supplying weapons to militants and says it wants to see action.

Iran has said it will issue an invitation for further talks soon.

The talks lasted for around four hours and did not touch on the issue of Iran's controversial nuclear programme.
