A fragile truce between Islamic militants and Lebanese soldiers centred on a Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon is holding.

Thousands of refugees have been leaving the Nahr al-Bared camp, which houses some 40,000 people.

It follows a lull in the violence after three days in which dozens of people, including civilians, have been killed.

A senior UN official has appealed to both sides to allow aid supplies into the camp, where thousands of others are still trapped.

He said it was outrageous that a relief convoy had been forced to turn back yesterday after coming under fire.

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Amir Moussa, also appealed for an end to the violence.
