US President George W Bush has said it is possible that G8 leaders will be able to reach agreement at their forthcoming summit on some basic principles on how to confront global climate change.

But in an interview with Reuters, Mr Bush said he doubted there could be an effective approach to dealing with climate change, globally, without the participation of China and India.

The G8 summit takes place in Germany next month and the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, has put climate change high on the agenda.
