Mortars have exploded near an army base in southern Iraq where British Prime Minister Tony Blair was meeting soldiers.

A series of explosions were heard near the base in Basra but there were no reports of injuries.

Earlier, as he arrived in Baghdad blasts were also heard.

Mr Blair paid tribute to British troops during his seventh and what is expected to be his last visit to the country as Prime Minister.

He added that they should not give in the terrorists.

Yesterday, Mr Blair defended his decision to back the invasion of Iraq.

A defiant Mr Blair insisted that there are signs of political progress towards a peaceful settlement of the four-year-old conflict.

Meanwhile, the US military has said that 6 US soldiers and their translator have been killed by a roadside bomb in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

In a separate incident 130km south of Baghdad, one US soldier was killed and two injured when their vehicle was hit by a blast.

In other violence, Iraqi police said five people were killed in two car bomb attacks in Baghdad.
