Baghdad - Bomb blast

At least 45 people have been killed in a series of attacks across Iraq.

In the worst incident, 29 people died and a further 63 were wounded in a car bombing in the Bayaa area of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

A second car bomb exploded near another bus stop a short distance away, killing at least four people.

Further north in the Sunni city of Samarra, a car bomb attack on a police station left 12 police officers dead.

US soldiers at a nearby base responded to the attack, killing at least two militants in the ensuing clashes.

The attacks in both cities bore the hallmarks of Sunni insurgent factions, in particular of al-Qaeda's Iraqi offshoot which has responded to a US-led security crackdown with a series of suicide attacks.
