A Kenya Airways airliner with 115 people on board has crashed shortly after takeoff from an airport in Cameroon.

The plane, which was bound for Nairobi, was carrying 105 passengers and nine crew.

Rescue teams are trying to find the site of the crash, and there has been no immediate word on any casualties.

Air traffic controllers had picked up a distress signal from the plane just after it took off from Douala Airport during a violent storm.

There were a total of 79 Africans of various nationalities on board at the time of the crash, as well as 15 Indians, six Chinese, five British, one Swiss, one Swede and one US citizen.

The nationalities of six others have not yet been confirmed.
