The Catholic Archbishop of Dublin and the Chairman of the Irish Council of Imams have issued a joint appeal calling for the release of BBC journalist Alan Johnston.

Mr Johnston was forced from his car at gunpoint as he drove home from work in Gaza City on 12 March.

Dr Diarmuid Martin and Sheikh Hussein Halawa, Imam of the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland, made the plea while addressing the Irish Executive Council of the National Union of Journalists.

They said that abducting a reporter could never help a cause, especially when the reporter was as fair and honest as Alan Johnston.
