The Transport Minister, Martin Cullen, has allocated an extra €20m to Bus Éireann for the purchase of 75 new buses.

This is in addition to the €50m given to the company in 2006 for the purchase of 160 new buses under the  Government's Transport 21 programme.

Mr Cullen made the announcement at Bus Éireann’s presentation of its 2007-2009 expansion plans for the Leinster/Greater Dublin Area.

Bus Éireann said its future plans for the region include enhanced frequency, added destinations, more feeder buses, extra late night services, improved airport and college links and services from new residential areas.

The company expects to carry 8.4 million extra passengers by 2009, with the aim of reducing car journeys by 2 million each year up to 2016.
