Gardaí have urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads over the Easter weekend.
100,000s of people are expected to travel over the holiday period with large numbers of passengers due to pass through the country's airports.
Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority have re-iterated a joint appeal to motorists to drive safely over the weekend, after nine people lost their lives in crashes during the same period last year.
Heavy fog affected large sections of the country this morning and concerns were raised by gardaí after reports that motorists using the M7 between Portlaoise and Naas were driving fast and not using their fog lights or dipped headlights.
330,000 people are meanwhile expected to use Dublin Airport this weekend and the Dublin Airport Authority has drafted in extra staff to help cope.
Passenger numbers are up 9% on the same period last year with 2,080 flights due in and out of the airport this weekend.
Passenger numbers are also up at Cork, Shannon and other regional airports.
Over 300,000 people are expected to use Iarnrod Éireann's inter-city rail services between now and Monday night with similar numbers expected to use Bus Éireann services.
