Ireland increases territorial waters

Atlantic - UN makes major decision

Ireland has increased its territorial waters following a major decision by the United Nations.

It opens up the possibility of Ireland further extending its territorial waters off the west Coast, including one area believed to be rich in minerals and hydrocarbons.

Until tonight's decision Ireland was only allowed to exploit waters up to 200 miles from its coast.

But the UN decision could now prove one of a number of steps to pave the way for opportunities for oil, gas and mineral exploration.

The extension does not include any extra fishing rights.
