Shannon Airport - Revised package for workers

The Minister for Transport Martin Cullen has welcomed the overwhelming acceptance by workers at Shannon Airport to accept a rationalisation plan.

Martin Cullen said Shannon airport is now in a strong position to make the cost base sustainable and to fully exploit the opportunities that Open Skies will offer to the Shannon region.

The results of a ballot of workers showed there was a 92% turnout with 82% voting for the deal.

The plan aims to seek 200 redundancies and savings of up to €10m.

Its understood applications for voluntary severence will begin soon, but could take up to five weeks.

Counting of the votes from the ballot, which was carried out over the past two weeks, began earlier today.

The first version of the plan, which offered workers a €10,000 lump sum, ten weeks' pay for every year of service, and enhanced pensions was initially overwhelmingly rejected.

However, the revised package brokered with the assistance of the Labour Relations Commission was subsequently put to workers after SIPTU recommended its acceptance.
