The US has said it is deeply concerned about the recent arrests of opposition activists in Zimbabwe and has called on neighbouring countries to publicly denounce the crackdown.
The US State Department has called on the 14-member Southern African Development Committee, which is meeting in Tanzania today, to publicly call President Robert Mugabe to account for what it called his years of misrule.
A spokesman said Mr Mugabe was engaged in an all-out campaign to intimidate the legitimate opposition in Zimbabwe and that the regional summit should make it clear that this was unacceptable.
