A 38-year-old-man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping a 25-year-old woman in Killarney Co Kerry three years ago.
Vasile Vardoshilli, a father of three originally from Georgia, denied raping the young Polish woman on her second night in Ireland in August 2004.
He was convicted of rape, false imprisonment and assault last month following a five-day trial.
In court he sobbed as Mr Justice Barry White handed down the sentence.
The young woman had come to Ireland because she was told Vardoshilli had organised a job for her.
Mr Justice White said it seemed to him that Vardoshilli had taken advantage of a young innocent woman seeking employment.
The court heard that the victim had now 'gone into herself' and did not like going out and meeting strangers.
However the court also heard that she does not feel vengeful towards Vardoshilli and did not want to see him serve a long prison sentence.
