Fianna Fáil has accused the Opposition of making an unprecedented level of election promises, which he said Ireland could not afford.

The Minister for Social & Family Affairs, Séamus Brennan, claimed that Fine Gael and Labour were being reckless, and threatening the country with bankruptcy.

Mr Brennan made the comments while publishing the clár for this weekend's Fianna Fáil Ard-Fheis.

He said Fianna Fáil would not be attempting to match the promises being made by the Opposition, which he claimed added up to an alarming figure.

Mr Brennan said Government ministers would also be announcing new policies, but claimed these would not threaten economic stability.

He indicated that Fianna Fáil would be returning to the cost of Opposition promises during the election campaign.

Asked if the same charge of making lavish promises could not be levelled at the Progressive Democrats, Minister Brennan said Fianna Fáil were concentrating on the alternative Government which was being offered to the electorate.
