Five people were taken to hospital in Galway following a fire in a city centre apartment block, while an elderly man is being treated for serious burns after another fire at a flat block in Dublin.
The five in Galway are believed to be suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.
The fire, which broke out shortly after 7am this morning, caused extensive damage to the apartment at Eglington Court, Wood Quay.
Two units of the city fire brigade brought the blaze under control earlier today.
Gardaí say they are investigating the cause of the fire.
Man suffers serious burns in Dublin fire
An elderly man is being treated in hospital for serious burns he received in a fire at a block of flats in Dublin's north inner city.
The fire broke out at St Mary's Place in Cabra just before midnight.
A number of gardaí have also been treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
Initial indications suggest it was accidental.
