Fine Gael stamp duty plans questioned by PDs

Stamp duty - Reform plans

Fine Gael has said that rebalancing the tax system in favour of young families and home buyers will be its top priority if it is in Government after the next election.

The party has published a €650m plan to help families cope with the cost of living, and to reform stamp duty.

It claimed its plan to reform stamp duty for both first time buyers and those trading up or down would cost the exchequer €450m.

However Senator John Minihan of the Progressive Democrats has branded Fine Gael's proposals on stamp duty as 'too little too late'.

He asked if Enda Kenny had checked whether Pat Rabbitte, Trevor Sargent and Joe Higgins approved of the plan.

Mr Minihan accused Fine Gael of copying PD proposals to 'band' stamp duty rates, saying Fine Gael had instead set an exemption limit of €450,000 for first time buyers instead of abolishing the tax completely.

And he claimed Fine Gael and Labour had been in Cabinet when the current 'very unfair' system was increased.
