Six dead in Kabul ammunition shop blast

Six people have been killed and nine wounded in an explosion in the Afghan capital Kabul.

The massive blast at a shop selling ammunition, gunpowder and dynamite is not thought to be related to the ongoing insurgency in the country.

A number of neighbouring shops were destroyed in the explosion, which left a three metre crater and littered the area with broken weapons and ammunition. The incident occurred in a bazaar not far from the residence of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

With the city wary of attacks by Taliban militants, initial reports suggested the blast may have been the result of a bomb, but this was later denied by police.

It is not yet clear what caused the blast.
