90% of farmers still believe that their profession is a good way of life, according to a survey by the state farm authority Teagasc.
And 93% of farmers appreciate being in charge and being their own boss, according to a report.
However, a combination of low incomes combined with a feeling of isolation resulted in farmers considering farming a poor choice of career for young entrants.
The findings were outlined at an agricultural research forum in Tullamore, Co Offaly.
