The leader of Zimbabwe's main opposition party, Morgan Tsvangirai, has been arrested and another activist shot dead during a protest against President Robert Mugabe's government.

Mr Tsvangirai and five senior colleagues were among 100 poeple arrested after trying to hold a rally that the Zimbawean government said breached a ban on political gatherings.

Police clashed with rock-throwing opposition supporters in the Harare township of Highfield, where protesters had attempted to highlight Zimbabwe's deepening political and economic crisis.

Riot police also used tear gas and water cannons as they fought battles with the demonstrators.

In a statement, the opposition Save Zimbabwe Campaign said lawyers were being denied access to those detained and that police had arrested five student activists at a workshop in Harare.
