The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern, and his Swedish counterpart have confirmed that the EU is preparing to restart high-level contacts with Syria for the first time in two years.
Mr Ahern said there is a growing recognition within the EU that the bloc needed to re-engage with Syria because of its central role in the Mid-East region.
Mr Ahern said experience had shown that diplomatic engagement works better than isolation.
