Authorities in Indonesia say the death toll from this morning's airliner disaster is now 21, and not 49 as first reported.

118 others were also on board.

The plane, which was operated by the state airline Garuda, crashed and burst into flames on landing at Yogyakarta airport in Java.

Australia's Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, said there were nine Australians on board, four of whom were missing.

They included officials and journalists covering his visit to Java.

Australian air force jets were due to fly to the city as soon as the runway was cleared to offer help to any injured Indonesians or Australians requiring evacuation.

They had been in Jakarta for a security summit.
