The US President, George W Bush, is to form a commission to investigate the treatment for military personnel who have been injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He is expected to say in a radio address later today that the treatment of some of them has been unacceptable.

His intervention follows reports that a military hospital in Washington is infested with rodents and cockroaches.

A senior defence official, Army Secretary Francis Harvey, and a senior officer, Major General George Weightman, have lost their jobs.

In his speech - already available on the White House website - Mr Bush acknowledged that the situation had to be addressed.

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates said yesterday that he was  'disappointed' with the service's defensive response to the scandal over the care of wounded troops at the Walter Reed Army Medical Centre.
