Japan to end Antarctic whaling expedition

Japan has said it is ending a controversial whaling expedition in the Antarctic after engineers failed to repair the crippled main vessel in the fleet.

The Nishin Maru ship was damaged in a fire.

The whale hunt, which the Japanese say is for research purposes, was to have continued until the end of March.

The six-vessel fleet had been kept under constant surveillance by anti-whaling activists.
