At least 14 people, including two soldiers, are reported to have been killed in a suicide bomb attack on the main US base in Afghanistan.
However the US military has so far only confirmed the deaths of nine people in the explosion. A further 27 were wounded.
The Taliban said it had carried out the attack, a spokesman claiming US Vice President Dick Cheney was the target.
The suicide bomber was on foot and blew himself up at the outermost gate of the base.
Mr Cheney was not injured in the blast, which came after bad weather forced him to stay overnight at Bagram Air Base, 60km north of Kabul, during a surprise visit to Afghanistan.
He later travelled to Kabul to meet the Afghan President, Hamid Karzai.
One of the soldiers killed was a US serviceman, the other was from South Korea. Most of the other victims were local labourers.
Mr Cheney has now left the country.
He visited Pakistan yesterday and met President Pervez Musharraf, urging Islamabad to make greater efforts to track down al-Qaeda and Taliban militants regrouping in the northern tribal areas.
Mr Karzai has regularly accused Pakistan of not doing enough to crack down on militants coming across the border to launch attacks against Afghan, US and NATO forces.
