At least 40 people, most of them students, were killed and 34 wounded when a suicide bomber targeted a busy university in the capital, Baghdad today.

Police said the attacker detonated the bomb hidden in his vest after he was prevented by security guards from entering the city's Economy and Administration College.

The explosion occurred at the main entrance to the college which had fewer students than usual due to mid-term holidays.

The college is part of the renowned al-Mustansiriya University and lies a few km north of the main campus, near the Shia stronghold of Sadr City.

That was struck by a twin bomb attack on 16 January that killed at least 70 people and wounded at least 140.
