A US Marine involved in the killing of a 52-year-old Iraqi man has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Lance Corporal Robert Pennington, who is 22, was one of seven Marines and a Navy medic who set out to kidnap and kill a suspected insurgent, but instead seized Hashim Ibrahim Awad, a disabled police officer.

According to testimony from other defendants, they dragged Awad from his home in Hamdania, tied him up and stuffed him in a bomb crater with a stolen rifle and shovel to make it look like he was planting a roadside bomb.

They then shot and killed him in a staged gunfight.
