Luas Citywest - New deal puts extension to Saggart on track

Developers behind the proposed Luas Citywest extension signed a major deal today with the Rail Procurement Agency (RPA).

Citywest Luas Ltd will fork over €39 million to develop the line as part of a Public Private Partnership. The RPA will provide the remainder for infrastructure and the tram cars.

The new extension will split from the current Luas Red Line between Belgard and Cookstown stations and continue out to Saggart.

With stops at Fettercairn, Cheeverstown, Citywest Campus and Fortunestown, it will serve a number of current and future housing developments as well as the Citywest Business Campus and Citywest Hotel.

The Cheeverstown stop will feature a park-and-ride facility to serve the outer ring road.

The 4.2 km long Luas Citywest is part of the Government's Transport 21 plan and should be ready to ride by 2010, pending planning approval.
