The Labour Party has made two further election pledges tonight on housing and health.

Pat Rabbitte also claimed the Government's dispute with hospital consultants was a contrived row.

Mr Rabbitte said that Labour in Government would enable those in work to begin buying a home, reflecting the party's proposal to have local authorities guaranteeing part of the mortgage for young people.

He also said his party would provide more beds in clean hospitals by instructing the HSE to deliver beds within a set deadline.

These two pledges bring to five the firm commitments that Labour will put before the people.

Mr Rabbitte was speaking ahead of tomorrow's special Labour conference at the Helix in Dublin City University.
