The Irish Postmasters' Union is to hold a national demonstration in Dublin later this month to highlight the crisis facing the Irish post office network.

The IPU has also announced its intention to run a number of candidates in the forthcoming General Election.

The IPU says over 300 postmasters have left the business over the last two years, with a similar number of offices set to close over the next two to three years.

A series of regional meetings have taken place over the last three weeks with union branches across the country, culminating in a meeting in Dublin last night.

The national demonstration will take place on Tuesday 20 February.

Postmasters and postmistresses from across the country will march from Parnell Square to Dáil Éireann via the General Post Office on O'Connell Street in order to highlight the crisis facing the Irish post office network.
