Artist Louis Le Brocquy and poet Thomas Kinsella are to receive the freedom of Dublin.
The city council voted today to grant the honour to the two men next May.
Lord Mayor Vincent Jackson, who proposed the idea, said both men are Dublin born and had made and outstanding contribution to the arts internationally.
He also pointed out that the both men are in the autumn of their lives with Le Brocquy now 90 years of age, and Kinsella 79 years.
The two men collaborated on one famous occasion when Le Brocquy provided drawings for Kinsella's translation of ‘The Tain’.
The freedom of the city is the highest honour the council can bestow.
Previous recipients include Bob Geldof, U2, Ronnie Delany and Mother Teresa and former US president Bill Clinton.
