Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for an immediate end to fighting between his Fatah faction and the governing Hamas movement that has left 17 people dead in the past 24 hours.

Speaking in Ramallah, Mr Abbas called on all parties to end the violence which he said was 'contrary to the interests of the Palestinian people'.

17 Palestinians have been killed and around 170 people wounded following the collapse of a fragile truce in Gaza.

In overnight clashes, the Islamic University in Gaza was set on fire with Hamas officials accusing Fatah of seeking to demolish what is seen as a key symbol of Hamas strength in the area.

While Hamas has taken control of a military base used by Mr Abbas's presidential guard, seizing a large amount of arms in the process.

Militants earlier fired mortar shells and rocket-propelled grenades towards offices in the presidential compound.

Separately, Israeli troops have shot dead two Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

Both men, who were officers in President Abbas' security service, were killed as they got out of a car in Beitunia near Ramallah.

An Israeli army spokesperson said the men were 'identified as gunmen' before being shot.

Both were wearing civilian clothing.
