The Labour leader, Pat Rabbitte, has made a personal commitment to increase the number of community gardaí by over 1,000 within three years if Labour is part of the next Government.

Speaking at the Garda Training College in Templemore this morning, he said that the gardaí should be a lot more focused on community policing.

He added that we needed more community gardaí who will get to know the area they police and who can become known by the people who live in these areas.

He said as part of his second 'To Do List' for entering Government he will make it a personal priority that the number of community gardaí will be increase from approximately 500 at present to 1,500 by the year 2010.
