The Garda Water Unit has said that weather conditions have hampered diving efforts in the search for the five crewmen missing from the Dunmore East-based trawler, Pere Charles.

The search has now been called off for the evening and will resume early tomorrow.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio's News At One, Sergeant John Bruton said that weather conditions were not looking good for diving either today or tomorrow.

Naval divers travelled to Hook Head this morning but were forced to turn back due to swells of up to five metres.

They had sought to travel to the location where the wreckage of the Pere Charles is believed to be located.

Also on the programme, Tom Power of the Marine Casualty Investigation Board said it made little difference that some of the crew were fishing together for the first time.

Mr Power said the investigation teams were now trying to establish the facts of what happened in what he called a catastrophic incident.

Their Dunmore East-based vessel, the Pere Charles, sank off Hook Head on Wednesday evening.

Two life rafts from the vessel were recovered during searching yesterday.

Debris was also found close to the location where the fishing vessel is believed to have gone down.

Senior clergy have asked people to remember the missing crewmen and their families in their prayers.
