A funeral service for former US President Gerald Ford who died last week aged 93, has been held in Washington.

The US President, George W Bush, had designated today a national day of mourning.

Mr Bush delivered a eulogy at the service, which was attended by all the living former presidents - Jimmy Carter, Mr Bush's father George Snr, and Bill Clinton.

'In President Ford, the world saw the best of America and America found a man whose character and leadership would bring calm and healing to one of the most divisive moments in our nation's history,' the current President said.

His body had been lying in state in the Rotunda in the Capitol building in Washington since late on Saturday.

It has now been flown to his home state, Michigan, for interment at the Gerald Ford Museum in Grand Rapids.
