Passenger plane missing in Indonesia

Indonesia is focusing rescue efforts on Sulawesi Island after a passenger plane went missing earlier today.

Contact was lost with the Boeing aircraft about an hour before it was due to land in Manado in North Sulawesi.

The plane was carrying 96 passengers and six crew on a flight that originated in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.

The Indonesian Transport Ministry said efforts to reach the co-pilot by mobile phone indicated the plane was on the ground rather than at sea.

Air and sea searches of a mountainous area are to begin in the morning.
