New images of Saddam Hussein's execution yesterday have been released.

The pictures were taken using a mobile telephone.

The former Iraqi leader and his executioners can be heard exchanging insults before his moment of death.

Saddam Hussein was buried in his home village of Awja near Tikrit in northern Iraq this morning.

Ali al-Nida, the head of his clan, said the burial took place in a family plot in the early morning, less than 24 hours after the former president was hanged for crimes against humanity.

Saddam Hussein's relatives, including sons Uday and Qusay, are buried in the same cemetery.

Iraqi state television reported that the Iraqi government formally handed over Saddam Hussein's body to Sheikh al-Nida.

The body was then taken to Tikrit, north of the capital, Baghdad, where members of his tribe and clerics prayed over it before he was laid to rest.
