Dublin City Council has released figures which show that just under 2,500 trucks used the Dublin Port Tunnel between midnight last night and midday today.

According to the authority it has led to a 38% reduction in trucks travelling from the port and down the North Wall towards Custom House Quay.

Along the East Wall in that period there was 66% fewer trucks heading for the port while on Arran Quay and Essex Quay there has been between 24% and 35% less heavy goods vehicles.

Earlier, hauliers warned that plans to ban trucks from Dublin city centre may fall apart as hundreds of truck drivers opt for city centre routes rather than taking the Port Tunnel to the M50.

On RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland, Jimmy Quinn of the Irish Road Haulage Association said he was surprised that more truck drivers had not availed of the new port tunnel route.

But he said he was confident that in time they would.

This morning, gridlock was reported around the Point Depot roundabout.

Hundreds of trucks again avoided the tunnel, opting to drive along the quays and through the centre of Dublin to begin their journeys to the south, southeast and west of the country.
