Rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah have agreed to restore calm in the Gaza Strip following a day of violence between gunmen from both groups.

It has been reported that the groups have agreed to resume talks on forming a unity government, halt armed displays, return security forces to their headquarters, release men abducted by each side, and end a siege of ministries.

The news comes following increased violence in the Gaza Strip, where earlier today there were two mortar explosions near the office of the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

On Saturday, Abbas called for early presidential and  parliamentary elections in a move that has been slammed by Hamas.
